October #jammed: Free Grace.

Day 295: Youth is a powerful platform.

“We have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16

She sat with her back turned to me as I led the team she’d asked me to lead. Though she suffered in her own regard, living as the target of her sickness didn’t make me feel any better. Suffering in the wake of my own diagnosis, I had counted on my friend to walk by my side.

When she e-mailed me to apologize, I had already forgiven her. But, I couldn’t make the U-turn to walk down the street we both lived on to mend what had been broken. The “For Sale” sign turned to “Sold,” and I still couldn’t win the stale-mate between my feet and the path to her door to say good-bye.

Today’s verse is comfort to the confection that remains lodged in our hearts after an upheaval of hurt. Jesus calls us to trust in Him. Many times, we try to fix things ourselves. We need a reason why and an assurance we won’t get hurt. We’re after solutions and evidence. Forgiveness is impossible when left in our hands alone.

But in the hands of the One that went to the cross for us when He didn’t have to …the ultimate in forgiveness …we can experience miracles of reconciliation. Or, at least, the peace of forgiveness.

Good fruit will shine through even the darkest suffering. When I look at my daughters, my heart breaks to think of the pain they will endure in the path of friendship over the span of their lives. We are destined to hurt each other, but what we don’t often realize is how available forgiveness and reconciliation are. In Christ, we acquire the peace that we are not capable of attaining on our own accord.

Father, Praise You for the brightness You reveal through dark experiences. Help us to have forgiving and empathetic hearts towards those that hurt us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
