June #jammed: Under the Blanket of Grace.

Day 161: Crystal Clear.

“ But if we own up to our sins, God shows that He is faithful and just by forgiving us of our sins and purifying us from the pollution of all the bad things we have done.” 1 John 1:9

We often don’t realize we’re not OK until we look back. The fleeting feeling that we’re “in control” is a red flag were about to lose it. It’s that thing we thought we were handling, until suddenly… it handles us.

How many times are we forgiven for doing what we know is wrong? For putting ourselves in situations that we know are ridiculous, just to keep from disappointing people? People?! Nevermind the God above who created everything and everyone …but people.

Beyond the consequence to our actions is the reality that He doesn’t leave. Jesus doesn’t leave. He knows our hearts hurt when we do what I hate. Knows our humanity like none other. Our struggles. Mine, to be friends with and love on everyone no matter the risk to my own reputation …and sometimes, I fear, my witness.

In today’s verse, He assures us all:

“But if we own up to our sins…” – It’s hard to face God after we know we’ve blown it …again. It’s embarrassing, and I know He’s seen everything. But we still have to pray it out. “I’m sorry, I ______________.”

“God shows us He is faithful and just by forgiving our sins…”  Not which sins or up to how many times. Just ‘sins.’ It’s a lot harder for us to forgive ourselves than it is for God to forgive us.

“…and purifying us from the pollution of all the bad things we have done.” Not only forgiven, but purified. That’s extremely powerful, isn’t it? Think of the effect purified water has on our bodies as opposed to water tainted with lead or other dangerous chemicals. Sin seeps into the very cracks of our soul. No willpower alone can remove it. Through Jesus, grace purifies.

What’s better, to avoid all people that could allow or influence us in a sinful way? Or, to accept and love all people regardless of what situation it puts our soul in. Tricky, right? God tells us to “pray about everything,” including those who we choose to expose your souls too, the situations we step into, and the strength and discipline to repent with changed hearts as we seek God daily in His Word. When we put Him first, the things we pray about fall into perspective.

Father, Praise You for forgiveness and redemption. Thank You for purifying our souls when we confess our sin. Please forgive us when we falter and knowingly and repetitively sin against You. Send Your Spirit to help us grow strong in Your will. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
