August #jammed: Reflecting on Grace.
Day 213: Turn it up.
“The Spirit then led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” Matthew 4:1
“Here.” …and they handed me a microphone.
“You might want to say something between songs …” one of the leaders suggested.
Really, God? I remember thinking. This is not what I signed up for when I said I’d lead a kids worship team…what on earth do You want me to say?
Today’s verse launches Jesus into the desert for the infamous rounds of temptation He went with the devil.
“The Spirit led …”
The Spirit leads us to and through things that we need to test and strengthen our faith. Situations we would not put ourselves in and challenges we would not have chosen not to take …but, God. Through our faith His voice is amplified. The more we try to turn from it, the louder it gets. And when we walk with Jesus, it doesn’t take long to know that until we answer, He’ll keep turning up the volume.
The devil has his finger ready to swipe the volume up at any second, too. For Jesus, in the desert, he tried to drown out the sound of God’s Voice. God is always louder than the devil, we just have to chose to tune into Him. By repeating God’s Word, His voice was amplified even louder. The devil doesn’t like to hear Truth spoken out loud.
The devil can temp us, but we can also be our own worst enemy. Doubt and confusion are some of his favorite things to use against us. He’s been using “Is that really what God said” since the beginning of time. When we walk with Jesus daily, we’ll recognize God’s Voice. When we’re in His Word, we hear Him a little better. When we are in conversation with Him a lot, we get used to the things He’s likely to say. Christ’s character starts to seep into our hearts …and our hearts become more like His.
I’ve really grown to love this microphone that I never would have asked for. In small obedient steps, He has blown me away …with what He has to say …through me. Pass me the mic, God …what do You want me to say?
Father, Praise You for speaking life into our lives. Thank You for giving us direction and guiding us to and through what You call us to do in this life. Forgive us for trying to turn from Your voice, and strengthen us to follow Your voice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
