Day 248: Who’s timing …

“You should not judge by outward appearance. When you judge, search for what is right and just.” John 7:24 (VOICE)

“Mom,” my just-turned-nine-year-old motioned for my attention from the passenger seat, day 248“do you know what a drag queen is?”

As always, I wasn’t ready to discuss this topic … The production she was a part of for her upcoming recital was a story about a man who saves his father’s factory by manufacturing stilettos healed boots for drag queens.

I teared up along with Cyndi Lauper as I watched her speak about why she wrote the music for Kinky Boots, and yielded her passion for making sure that those that are left out of society are loved.

“Do you know what a drag queen is?” I asked my sweet faced baby girl that day.

“Well, yeah,” she responded. “I do now.”

Her passion for dance, writing, and music is creative and beautiful. She has a heart for people ...all people …but especially for those that feel left out. The new kids in school. Her baby sister in a group of older kids. God moved my heart in way I can’t fully describe.

“We have a choice to set a precedent right now, on how we will deal with the world impending upon her innocence,” I said to my husband as I filled him in on the news.

“I want her to know two things above all else about us as her parents:

1. That she can ask us anything. No topic is forbidden and all questions are always welcome.

2. That loving everyone is the most important part of life. It’s what we’re put here to do. Love each other. When faced with someone who is different than her, I want her to see Jesus first …and love that person like He would …for who they are, right where they are at, right now.”

I’m sure my girls will ask lots more questions before her dad and I are ready to answer them. And let’s face it, we may not have the answers to all of her questions. But we can help her find a way to love anybody, and everybody.

Jesus’ words echoed in my mind that day, as they often do, for I share that same love for people.

“You should not judge by outward appearance.”

“…search for what is right and just.”

Let’s not act like love excuses bad behavior, but let’s also realize that we aren’t privy to judge it. We are called to SEARCH for what is right and just. In every person, there is good. If we search for that good, we will find it. When we find it, our disagreements fade into the background where they belong, allowing God to judge as only He justly can.
