September #jammed: Free Grace.
Day 244: Well-oiled Words.
“You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5
Through the childhood years of motherhood, I’ve appreciated all advice, but followed only what prayerfully made sense to me as their mom. Sometimes God heals through doctors and prescriptions. Other times, through an oil or an adjustment.
Oils are not a new-age trend. God is most assuredly capable of using a multitude of ways to heal us. But for today, let’s take another look at the oil in Psalm 23:5.
The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible states that, “Olive oil could be used to treat dry or cracked skin, so it was a sign of hospitality to offer oil to visitors …thus, the psalmist is refreshed by being in God’s hospitable presence.”
Olive oil, that I cook with almost everyday, can also heal my skin and promote a feeling of hospitality in another culture. If God can use one oil for so many purposes …imagine the mark He’s capable of making with our lives. Each individually purposed, He seeks to heal, welcome, and love on others through our hands and our lives.
When we seek Jesus, this is the kind of multi-purposed reality we begin to experience. Things we didn’t realize we were capable of. Accomplishment far beyond our predictions. Situations left beyond explanation’s reach.
“The psalmist was refreshed by being in God’s hospitable presence.”
He longs to refresh us, heal us, uplift us, befriend us, and He loves us always. We have to do nothing …but believe. Believe in the One He sent to bridge the gap between our sinful nature and His holiness. Our healing lies with the Prince of Peace. Being connected with our Father and creator provides a peaceful meaning to life that withstands through all of the pain and suffering that we are promised this life will bring.
Father, Praise You for oils! Thank you for providing healing purpose in so many elements of Your creations. Forgive us for overlooking them, and for running past them as we follow our own ambitious ways to solve problems. Uphold us and bless us, and help us steer our lives in Your will for them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
