March #jammed: Grace Revealed.

Day 66: Grace rocks.

“These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.” Joshua 4:7bpost-image-66

Family tradition each summer is to haul back as many giant rocks from the shores of the Great Lake that we can carry. We hike out to a remote beach immersed in nature, and trudge along the edge of the crystal clear water in search of “treasure.” Each day we bring back more stones from the places we’ve trekked, and always laugh as we pack a week’s worth into the car to head home.

Our stones are stashed all over the house and out in the yard, and every time we see one we are taken back to the happy smiles and memories of wading in the carefree waters of family vacation.

Many of us know the story of the Red Sea parting for Moses and the Israelites as they escaped Egypt, but maybe there are more like me that didn’t know He parted waters once more for His people. God also parted the waters of the Jordan river so that His people could cross on dry land.

For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over.” Joshua 4:23

The water dried up completely! I live by a river, so I have a visual of the thick sediment that collects in shallow places. In order for the Israelites to have crossed, the river bed had to be completely dry. God sent for 12 stones to be carried from the center of the river onto the edge before the waters receded back to their banks.

“These stones would be a reminder to Israel and the generations which followed that god led an entire nation across the Jordan just like He led their forefathers across the Red Sea. (Joshua 4:23)  He was ever present. All-powerful. their might Protector.” Leah DiPascal, First5

jammed-tweet-blueFather, Praise You for stones. They are proof of the complexity and purpose of Your creation. Thank You for the collection of memories that reflect Your kindness. We confess, we do not always see Your beauty when we look out on the horizon, and pray that You bless us with eyes wide open to Your hand on every thing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
