Meet Meg

June #jammed: Under the Blanket of Grace.

Day 153: Grace is always in tune.

“We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help.”2 Chronicles 20:12b (NLT)June 2

My Dad always sang along to the radio. Never the main melody, but the harmony. He
found a different way to sing a song. Make it his own a little. I’m sure he didn’t realize that his little girl was listening as intently and I was.

When I stand to worship in church, I too, relax into the harmonies as I let God grab me into His presence. In a sea full of voices, it doesn’t really matter how off-key I am. There’s something surreal about a big group of people that are all looking to be in the presence of the same, great God.

The harmony lets me wrap around the melody …He is the stable tune. Today’s verse reminds me of that search for harmony within the melody. I come to church every Sunday looking for Him, unsure of how to handle so much of  life …but completely trusting Him with mine.

This verse is a piece of Jehoshaphat’s prayer. He was “described as a king who ‘did what was right in the eyes of the Lord”” (New International Encyclopedia of Bible Characters.) Interestingly enough, despite his good efforts to do what was right, he was riddled by his alliance with a wicked king.

We are all susceptible to forming alliances that throw us off-key. The deceptive reality of the spiritual war we’re immersed in is the slight way in which we are pulled aside from what we’re meant to accomplish. When we listen attentively to the main Melody, we can keep our harmony in tune. But if we drift to far from it, we fall out of tune. We lose our way. We’re suddenly stuck in unhealthy situations, watching ourselves lose control …so unexpectedly at times!

Today’s verse reminds us that even when we think we know what we are doing …we do not always realize the error of our choices. It’s important to stay close to the Author of the song, and keep His voice louder than all others. It’s easy to become entangled and blinded by life, and that’s why Jesus died to give us the grace to endure it. When we fall, we can come to Him and He will forgive us, every time. He is our Savior because He saves us from ourselves.

Father, Praise You for music, and the depth to which we feel Your presence when we worship You through it. Thank You for creating so many of us with artistic talents and creative outlets. Your glory shines through Your creation. Forgive us for overlooking the true Source of all beautiful sounds, and help us to hear Your voice louder than any others. Wrap us in Your melody. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
