Day 274: Split and dead.

“Cultivate all these practices; live by them so that all will see how you are advancing and growing.” 1 Timothy 4:15

I’m the worst ever at making sure my daughters …and I …get our hair cut before we are day 274overwhelmed and overcome in split and damaged heads full of hair. By the time hair grows all the way past our shoulders from our scalp, it’s seen multiple dance competitions and dry-heated winter spaces. It’s been tugged on and sprayed and yanked and smoothed out. Probably even over-conditioned. Before we hit the ocean, lake, and chlorinated pools, we have to let some hair go.

Today’s verse shows us how to trim split suggestions and dead processes out of our lives. How to clear our minds of unwarranted spiritual twisting and misinforming opinions. Reroute relationships that have taken wrong turns and rejuvenate parts of ourselves that have been suppressed by societal pressure. How do we clean out the areas that are leaving us privy to the devil’s picking? We can look to Timothy, and the advice his mentor and spiritual leader, Paul, gave him.

In a sea full of voices and false interpretations … the young pastor, Timothy, was called to “set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” (4:12). Not just to set the example, but “cultivate all these practices.”

cultivate- to prepare and use for the raising of crops; to foster the growth of. -Merriam-Webster.

Our faith in Christ is never set to automatic. It’s a walk. And He’s always a step ahead of us. The only thing we have to do to follow Christ is believe in Him. Belief leads us to the Word, and the Word leads us to God’s will for our lives. It’s in the Living Word that we cultivate, foster, and yield a harvest. The harvest of faith’s walk is good fruit.

In cultivating, we are illuminated to the weeds in our garden. Much like the sensitive soil of our souls, each crop requires different food, water, and light; but all come from the same Source.

Father, Praise You for haircuts and dead weeds. Thank You for light up our lives and our awareness to all that is good, and what is not. We confess our likelihood to fall into the hands of ill meaning weeds, and pray that Your hand removes us unscathed each time. Help us to be patient, kind, and always outstretching a life full of You love to those around us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
