July #jammed: Grace serves.

Day 203: It doesn’t have be expensive to look worth it.

My son, pay attention to all the words I am telling you.July 22
 Lean in closer so you may hear all I say.
 Keep them before you; meditate on them;
 set them safely in your heart.
 For those who discover them, they are life.
They bring wholeness and healing to their bodies.” Proverbs 4:20-21

“Where did you get that?”

It happens all of the time. I don’t know if it’s God trying to encourage my ability to squeeze the very most out of a dollar or my participation in this version of recycling …but I’ve been muttering the same answer since college.

“The thrift store.”

Always a puzzled look. Every time.

Today’s verse speaks to parents, namely fathers …but in this world mothers are just as important in this facet of raising their children to know who they are. It doesn’t depend on what they can afford to buy or if they can match pants to a shirt. It doesn’t matter if they like to wear their hair down or tied up …wear a clip on or a bow tie …tie their shoes or just wear shoes that look like they’re tied. It doesn’t matter. We’re His no matter who we are.

I’ve taught my daughters that they can be just as happy with a something new to them as they can be with something brand new. It’s really the something different that we’re after. Kids grow out of things, but what’s our excuse? In adulthood, we’re not growing two shoe sizes every season, and wearing floods around because we grew before mom could get to the store.

Most of the time we dress to impress. Even thrifty people like to match and express their style. But at what point to do we lose Whose we are for “who” we are?

“We are flawed individuals …” Jimmy Buffett sings. Amen to that. Seriously flawed. So, if we focus too much of what we want based on the world around us, we’ll end up lost and far from God …Whose we already are.

Father, Praise You for thrift stores and recycling. Thank You for loving us because for who You made us to be, and forgive us for focusing more on who we think we need to be. Help us to hear Your voice above all the others, and to pass it on to our children. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
